The Britannia Inn was built in the 14th Century by the Monks of
the nearby Valle Crucis Abbey and is situated at the foot of the Horseshoe
Pass, having an extensive view of the Vale of Llangollen below. Well known throughout
the area for it's good food, accommodation and hospitality, the Britannia Inn is a favourite for locals
and holiday makers alike, offering high quality Bed and Breakfast (B&B)
accommodation and also half board accommodation (special breaks), in a relaxed
country setting.
As well as featuring in many quality Food and Hotel guides, the Britannia Inn Hotel has also featured in publications abroad - once favoured in the L.A. Times as the place to stop in North Wales! Another attraction for visitors to the Hotel are our award winning flower displays. The Britannia Inn is credited with no less than 15 Wales in Bloom awards - the colours change with the seasons and always look spectacular. Accommodation at the Britannia won't disappoint, the quaint "cottage style" guest rooms are friendly and welcoming, and four of the guest rooms have lovely panoramic views of the valley below.

Alternatively, wander down the mountain and explore picturesque Llangollen Town, centred around it's bridge crossing over the Dee River. Or just go off on an exciting adventure with one of the many local tourist activities!! There is so much to do from your base at the Britannia inn, you will be absolutely spoilt for choice. And even if the weather is poor, you can relax in your guest room with your Satellite Television and just feel your blood pressure reducing by the minute... looking forward to your next tasty meal down in the elegant dining room or the comfortable Lounge Bar. The Britannia Inn Hotel Llangollen offers a range of high quality accommodation. Each of the Britannia Inn's six en-suite bedrooms are individually decorated and furnished to a high standard. All our rooms are decorated in a cottage style and each room boasts a double half tester bed (the family suite also holds a double sofa bed) . All rooms have tea and coffee making facilities and basic satellite television.
The rooms have a range of bathroom options, some offering a shower, some a bath, and some offering a a choice of shower or bath.

You can be sure that you will be well looked after, and more often than not Ann, the Proprietor, will personally check up and have a word to make certain you are being looked after in top style!
You can be sure of a warm welcome at the Brit during the festive period. Have a look at our Christmas menu. We do this menu every Sunday Lunchtime from the end of November, and for parties (12 or more), we will do it any time - just call and make a booking!

Llangollen town spans the picturesque River Dee, and is a popular destination for river based activities such as White Water Rafting and Kayaking.
Llangollen is one of the few towns in Britain to offer 3 modes of transport in and out of the town. Firstly by road, secondly by steam railway, and thirdly by canal. Llangollen steam railway is open all year around and is very popular, particularly Thomas the Tank Engine and friends.
Nearby Aqueduct....
There are so many historical sites of interest and tourist attractions nearby it would be impossible to mention them all. The many historic buildings in the area include Chirk Castle, Valle Crucis Abbey (only 5 minutes walk from the Britannia Inn), Errdig Hall and Plas Newydd - to name but a few. The Inn is also in an ideal position for those wishing to explore further into Wales, being only 35 minutes from the Coastal towns of Colwyn Bay and Conway, and 40 minutes from the Snowdonia Mountain range and Llandudno. Horseshoe Pass is on the Inn's doorstep, picturesque Llangollen Town only a few minutes drive away, and the River Dee, Theatre Clwydd, and the historic walled city of Chester are all within easy striking distance.
At the right time of year, Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod is a must. But book early as accommodation is scarce during the Eisteddfod!
Valle Crucis Abbey is very nearby, easy walking distance...
And Castle Dinas Bran, also steeped in
history,
is straight up a nearby hill - well, not straight really,
unless you are incredibly fit!
For those wishing to travel a little further afield, probably the most famous of all castles, the place of Prince Charles investiture - Caernarvon castle - is just over an hour away.
We are also close to many centres for shopping, such as Wrexham, Oswestry, Shrewsbury and the historic walled city of Chester. Whatever you decide to do you can enjoy your day out safe in the knowledge that a warm and friendly greeting awaits you when you return to the Britannia Inn.

We have put together a list of walks in the area including information on all the local historical sites and beauty spots on the way. Walks range from a short (1 mile) hike to full day walks. A list of all the most popular walks are available at reception upon your arrival. A number of the walks start (or finish) at the Britannia Inn, so you have no need to drive anywhere to begin!
Radio Control Model Plane flying, Fishing and Golf are also popular local interests and some can be enjoyed by our visitors. For the adventurous, there is Canoeing, Gliding, Hang Gliding, Quad Biking, Para-ascending, Go-Karting, Horse Riding, Mountain Biking and Climbing - and more! All are available within the local area and most are only a short drive from the Britannia Inn. And if you enjoy venturing further afield, you will find you are only a short drive from Mt. Snowden in Snowdonia National Park, Port Merion (the filming location for the classic 70s Cult Series "The Prisoner"), Anglesey, and all the other attractions in beautiful North/Central Wales.

FROM THE SOUTH
From the A5 (south) turn right at the lights in Llangollen town centre, drive over the bridge and turn left. Then follow Abbey road (A542), which is the horseshoe pass road, for approximately three miles. We are on the left about a mile past the Valle Crucis Abbey. Look for the flowers, as you come up the hill from the Abbey.
FROM THE NORTH
From Chester follow the signs for Wrexham, take the Wrexham bypass, then follow the signs for Llangollen. Once in Llangollen centre, pass the bridge on your left. Then follow Abby road (A542), which is the horseshoe pass road, for approximately three miles. We are on the left about a mile past the Valle Crucis Abbey. Look for the flowers as you come up the hill from the Abbey.
FROM NORTH WEST WALES
OVER THE HORSESHOE PASS
Once you come over the pass (A542) and head down the "Horseshoe" shaped mountain pass road, past the old slate quarry, you can't miss us - you will easily spot the flagpoles and outdoor seating area - just turn in to the car park.

History...

The Britannia Inn, Llangollen, is steeped in Centuries of history and has close links with the nearby Valle Crucis Abbey. It is thought that originally the Britannia Inn was only one cottage built specifically for the monks, using some materials that could have been from the Abbey itself!
Now the Monks are said to still inhabit the Brit... some people are certain they have caught glimpses of monk-like shadows in several of the main public rooms, and others swear they have actually seen them!!
